The Port Perry Summer Theatre season wraps up with two evenings of new Canadian plays directed and presented by members of Theatre 3×60’s summer company.
Three new works will be presented in an informal staged reading format, where the audience plays a vital role in supporting the continued development of the scripts. Playwrights create in isolation, hearing their text and dialogue only in their heads. Hearing their words aloud can be an invaluable experience and staged readings provide an opportunity for the playwright’s creation to come to life; transmitted by actors and received by an audience.
The first program on August 1, features two one-act plays by Kevin Craig, King of the Crease in which Frank Eno is a once great goaltender with a rocky relationship with his son, his wife is worried about the pain medication he takes to keep his career wounds in check, and his daughter’s boyfriend is mesmerized by the treasure trove of hockey memorabilia and merchandise in Frank’s basement.
In the second play, The History of Us, Charlie’s not quite the man he used to be. He’s an ongoing concern, taken to obsessing about the night sky. David and Ben want to care for him, but his other son has different plans.
Kevin Craig is the author of young adult novels and adult-themed novels featuring young narrators. His published novels include; Summer on Fire, Sebastian’s Poet, The Reasons, Burn Baby Burn Baby, and, Half Dead & Fully Broken. He lives in Toronto, Canada. Kevin is also a playwright. He has had ten 10-minute plays produced, both locally and internationally. His poetry, short fiction, memoir, and, articles have been published and internationally. Kevin is a member of the Writers’ Community of Durham Region. He was also a founding member on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Writers’ Conference.
On August 3, Patrick and Marianne Lannigan’s Stronger, Freer celebrate the sesquicentennial through the challenges and accomplishments of one Canadian family as it grows and changes with the times from Confederation in 1867 to present day 2017.
Patrick & Marianne Lannigan are a husband and wife team, who worked together in the same department of the same banking software company and then theatre happened. As members of the Stouffville Theatre Company board of directors, they looked for a play to perform for the public and schools for the Canadian sesquicentennial celebration, but came up empty-handed and so they created Stronger, Freer as a celebration of Canada.
3xCanadians is being presented at the Church of the Ascension, 266 North St. in Port Perry at 7 pm on August 1 and 3. Tickets are $10/evening and are available at the door, or in advance online at www.theatre3x60.ca.
